236. Al Capp's Li'l
Abner Yokum (2002).
For several decades Li'l
Abner was one of the five most popular comic strips on the
planet and its creator Al Capp was America's best known
and most successful cartoonist. From 1934 to 1977 Li'l Abner
appeared in as many as 1,100 different newspapers and (according
to a 1977 People magazine) reached up to 90 million
people daily!
Li'l Abner Yokum, an obtuse but honest Dogpatch
bumpkin, was the central foil for forty-three years of Capp's
often wicked and hilarious satire. A confirmed bachelor, Abner
had to be tricked into marrying the highly desirable Daisy
Mae Scragg (see button #237) in 1952. Their wedding made
the cover of Life magazine. Kitchen Sink Press published
twenty-seven 12" x 9" volumes
of Li'l Abner Dailies,
many of which are still available in this web store. This is
