GOODMAN BEAVER: Soft cover edition (1984) by Harvey Kurtzman & Will Elder.

Kurtzman and Elder have often stated that "Goodman Beaver" represented their funniest work--- a strong statement, coming from two of the funniest men in comics history. Originally published in Kurtzman's Help! magazine in the early '60s, Kitchen Sink Press collected the material for the first and only time in this 1984 edition. Reprinted in full (shot almost entirely from original artwork) are four stories: "Goodman Meets T*rz*n" (Tarzan and a communist counterpart in cold war Africa); "Goodman, Underwater" (a spoof of the cold war and TV's Sea Hunt); "Goodman Meets S*perm*n" (our favorite: Superman "retires") and "Goodman Gets a Gun" (timeless satire on the power and mystique of guns). Excerpts are also shown from the controversial and much litigated "Goodman Goes Playboy" suppressed by the humorless folks at Archie Comics. Accompanying the classic stories is running commentary by Kurtzman and Elder, along with a history of the stories, the sorry Archie background, and their impact by comics historian Dave Schreiner. The Goodman Beaver character effectively underwent a gender change in 1962 and transformed into the voluptuous "Little Annie Fanny" (See the Introduction to Volume 1 of the complete Little Annie Fanny collection from Dark Horse Comics for the fascinating details). 11" x 8.5" softcover book. 160 pages. Long out-of-print.

Condition: the remaining soft cover editions we have in stock are in "near" mint condition. The insides are perfect, but the covers have some slight wear from being moved around from box to box. Some may have slightly bent corners or slightly scratched covers. We have NO completely perfect copies left in stock. They are all "unread" copies.

"These strips are masterpieces!" --Robert Crumb

(Note: A separate Signed & Numbered Hardcover (1,250 produced) and an Artist's Proof edition (only about 50 produced) is available by clicking the links at the bottom of this page.)

(For original art from this book click either Kurtzman or Elder under our Original Art Category.)
