FOX FIVER PATRIOT No.  19 (August 24- September 13, 1977) featuring a color cover by ROBERT CRUMB,"Woodman, Spare That Tree!!"

R. Crumb was a big fan of The Fox River Patriot. He wrote a flattering piece about it in Co-Evolutionary Quarterly, saying that it was one of his favorite publications. With only regional distribution, this is a very rare Crumb collectible.

Other Issue #19 Contents: Three feartures by regional historian Elaine Reetz... "Uncle Dutch Walter Nickel: Montello Native Son," "For the Plautz's of Kingston [WI} Hauling Milk is a Family Affair" and "Tipper Doo the Gremlin Comes Back to Earth: A Patriot Children's Story (illustrated by Peter Poplaski); "With Bob Smith in Westfield: Touring a Prairie Plant Nursery" by Tom Montag; "Two Ecosystems in Need of Protection: Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Northeast Minnesota and Indian Dunes National Seashore" by H. E. Wright, Jr.;  "A New Energy Plan for Wisconsin" by Jon C. Sesso; "As Farmlands Disappear Urban Sprawl Pollutes Our Waters" by Jean Lang; "Wall Street Awakens to Solar Energy" by Helene Kessler; photos by Rick Maki, plus column logos and local ads illustrated by Denis Kitchen.

Format: 32 pages, 11.5 x 17 inch tabloid style newspaper, folded to 8 3/4 x 11.5 inch cover size.

Condition: Near Mint uncirculated copy, carefully stored in cool environment for over three decades, with only faint aging typical of old newsprint.

PRICE: $25.00

Background: The Fox River Patriot was an alternative newspaper that circulated in central Wisconsin, co-founded by Denis Kitchen and Mike Jacobi, two of the co-founders of an earlier Madison/Milwaukee-based underground newspaper, The Bugle-American. Both papers were deliberately given "square" names in an effort to reach more mainstream midwestern readers (this first cover indicates that old ladies, farmers and hip cows were the primary audience).

Back issues of the papers tend to be sought by comics collectors (because contributions by various cartoonists appeared no where else) or nostalgic and history-minded Wisconsinites. Other selected back issues of The Patriot and The Bugle are available in this web store. Just type Patriot or Bugle or another key word in our search bar. We also have other issues not listed in the web store, so inquire if you seek issues not offered here.
